چکیده

We conducted nanoindentation to explore the hardness and elastic properties of silica stishovite, synthesized at high pressure and quenched to ambient conditions. A total of 10 crystallographic orientations were examined on selected grains with a maximum load of 4 or 20mN. We observed discontinuity in the load–displacement curve (pop-in) for the 1⁄22 5 1̄ and 1⁄26 2 1̄ grains subjected to a maximum load of 20mN. The single-crystal hardness at high plastic deformation is quasi-isotropic with an average of 32 1GPa, similar to the polycrystalline hardness reported earlier; the theoretical hardness determined from the experiments is about 54 3GPa. These two hardnesses suggest that stishovite is one of the hardest oxides. The measured indentation moduli are close to the predictions at low load (minor plasticity) but are considerably lower at high load (high plasticity). Both indentation hardness and modulus decrease with increasing plasticity. Our results underscore the necessity of considering the degree of plastic deformation when interpreting hardness and elastic moduli from indentation experiments. r 2007 Elsevier B.V. Preferred orientation in experimentally deformed stishovite: implications for deformation mechanisms

Stishovite is a polymorph of SiO2 present in the mantle, making its deformation properties relevant to Earth science. Stishovite was first produced experimentally (Stishov and Popova 1961) and found to have a rutile structure (space group P42/mnm, Stishov and Belov 1962; Sinclair and Ringwood 1978; Ross et al. 1990) with its silicon in octahedral rather than tetrahedral coordination, as is char...

Nano-structural Characterization of Post-annealed ZnO Thin Films by X-ray Diffraction and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy

ZnO thin films were deposited on Si(400) substrates by e-beam evaporation technique, and then post-annealed at different annealing temperatures (200-800°C). Dependence of the crystallographic structure, nano-strain, chemical composition and surface physical Morphology of these layers on annealing temperature were studied. The crystallographic structure of films was studied using X-Ray Diffracti...

Occurence of Post Stishovite in Shergottites Nwa 856 and Zagami: a Cathodoluminescence Study

The physical state of silica is a very useful index of shock in meteorites. Its study has been revived by the discovery of high pressure silica in Shergotty of the αPbO2 and ZrO2 structure [14]. Shergottites usually contain a few percent of silica with varied textures depending on their location in the rock. Cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging and spectroscopy is a powerful technique which enables...

Thermodynamics of polymorphic transformations in silica. Thermal properties from 5 to 1070°K and pressure-temperature stability fields for coesite and stishovite *

Cryogenic heat-capacity measurements on coesite and stishovite provide thermodynamic properties from 5 to 350°K. The heat capacities (C,), entropies (SO), and Gibbs energy functions [-(Go H”,)/T] are 10.85, 9.65, 4.124, and 10.27, 6.64, 2.362 at 298015°K for coesite and stishovite, respectively, in Cal/( mole “K). Enthalpies of transition for phase changes were determined by solution calorimetr...
